5 Ways to Thrive in the Midst of Challenge and Despair from Donna Stoneham, Ph.D. (Author of The Thriver's Edge)

Book provided for review/feature consideration

It’s easier to thrive when things are going well. It’s much harder to flourish in times of challenge or despair. The past nine-months have been particularly challenging for many as alarming events have unfolded at a pace never experienced before, including multiple terrorist attacks, the plight of refugees, black lives cut short, and police officers murdered. Add to that the most divisive US Presidential election ever and at times it feels as though things are spinning out of control.

Finding the Right Words: What to do If You Suspect Your Child is Having Suicidal Thoughts

By Dr. Laurie Johnson and Dr. Brian Johnson

Every day there are 5,400 attempted suicides by young people in grades 7-12. According to the CDC, “More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.”

September is Suicide Prevention Month, so it's an appropriate time to introduce you to Dr. Laurie Berdahl and her husband Dr. Brian Johnson. As proud parents, they noticed that youth in our nation were in crisis and they wanted to take steps to prevent further tragedy. Now, they are speaking out to help parents, guardians, and educators understand warning signs in youth that lead to harm, and in some cases death, and what immediate and preventative steps can be taken.

Below excerpt is from their new book WARNING SIGNS: How to Protect Your Kids from Becoming Victims or Perpetrators of Violence and Aggression and helps parents know what to do if they suspect their child is in danger.

The Moodsters, five lovable little detectives (Coz, Lolly, Snorf, Razzy and Quigly), come to the rescue whenever their friends, Zach and Zoey, have a feelings emergency. The stories and toys teach simple strategies to build social and emotional intelligence skills in young children.
