This is my sweet little Kenziekins. She is my youngest daughter, and for all intents and purposes, my last child. My littlest little will be 3 next week {I can't even begin to tell you how fast that has come} and I'm a bit ashamed to admit that she is not fully potty trained yet. Part of it is because she is the youngest and my last, so I've really been relishing her baby-ness. Plus, this is her general attitude towards potty training...

A CGC For the Mini Me's: CURLS Curly Q's Line
London and her glorious crown of curls! |
I love that I have 3 daughters-honestly I have no idea what I'd do with boys (but that's probably because I don't have them). I have to admit though, with 3 very different heads of hair to deal with (two of which are very, very curly), at times I envy mommies that have the comparably easy duty of grooming boys.

Pureology Precious Oil System AKA: A Curly Girl Chronicle
Quick side note: I can't see the name of this line without hearing Golam in my head saying "My precious." |
I was super stoked to try out this line, because as y'all know, I'm OBSESSED with oils! Plus the information I read on it said that it would do some awesomely major stuff for my hair: Experience radiant haircolour and 10X softer hair after just one use with Pureology Precious Oil™ haircare system for all hair types for ultimate softness. The Precious Oil system features the groundbreaking Green Seal Certified Versatile Caring Oil, the first 100% biodegradable product that is free of silicone and parabens for colour-treated hair, as well as a first of its kind Shamp’Oil – an oil-infused Zero Sulfate and silicone free featuring a unique oil delivery system that penetrates deep into hair fiber to deliver 4X the active ingredients to drastically replenish hair from the inside out. The Precious Oil system also includes an oil-infused Condition and Softening Masque. Together, the system evenly recharges every hair strand for softer, shinier, fuller and longer-lasting hair colour guaranteed. Each product in this system is designed to cleanse, condition, treat, or restore the health of the hair’s protective layer. Additionally, the Precious Oil haircare system features Sunflower Seed Oil for softness, Coconut Oil for elasticity, Olive Oil for shine and Jojoba Seed Oil for moisture. The Precious Oil system also features the exclusive oil-based OleoAntiFadeComplexTM/MC that replicates the way hair absorbs nutrients to deliver 4X active ingredients from root to tip to provide superior colour retention for longer lasting hair colour, guaranteed.
See? Pretty awesome! I don't have color treated hair, but often times I find that products marketed towards color treated hair are well suited for curly hair as well, as they are super moisturizing and non stripping. So here's what I thought after trying Pureology's Precious Oil Line...

Tropic Isle Living Leave In Conditioner & Detangler- AKA: A Curly Girl Chronicle (CGC)
Tropic Isle Living's Leave-In Conditioner and Detangler |
Product Description: Give your hair that extra vibrancy it needs by using Tropic Isle Living's Leave-In Conditioner and Detangler with a fusion of Rosemary, Shea, and Jamaican Black Castor Oil. This conditioner not only conditions your hair, it also calms tangled hair making it so much easier to comb through. It adds extra sheen and moisture-helping to keep your curls looking fresher and more defined than ever. Use on dry hair to refresh your style. Do not rinse out. Squeeze an adequate amount of product into palms and apply over, under and through hair. For more defined curls apply product to wet or fairly damp hair.
Ingredients: Organic Aloe Juice, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Shea Oil, Vitamin E, Vegetable Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Stearalkonium Chloride, Meadowfoam Oil, Phenoxyethano, di-Pathenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Black Willow Bark Extract, Rosemary, Bay, Basil, Cedarwood, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Pimento, and Cetearyl Alcohol.
My Take: I *love* a spray detangler/leave in conditioner, and with the all star list of ingredients (aloe juice, JBCO, and Pro Vitamin B-yes please!) in Tropic Isle Living's Leave In Conditioner and Detangler, I had very high hopes for this one. And I was not disappointed! It was a great introduction to the brand (stay tuned for more reviews of their products), and a great product to boot. I used it on Kenzie to detangle her ever growing mane (I promise she has more hair every time I do it) and was so pleased with the results that I attempted French braided pigtails on her for the first time...
The only way her hair could have turned out better is if she had actually stayed still :) |
Thusly motivated, I aimed the spray at my own tresses in order to dry detangle my own hair (my normal pre poo habit) and was once again so impressed with the results, that I actually held off on washing my hair. The conditioner left my hair so shiny and soft and smooth, I just couldn't convince myself to wash it away! The only slight caveat to this product (and it is not at all a deterrent, even for me the fragrance snob) is that, in order to maintain the integrity of the formula, there are no fragrances added to any of the products in the Tropic Isle Living line. What you smell is a combination of all the wonderful, natural ingredients within-a scent that I can only describe as nuanced, earthy, and herbally-not at all unpleasant, just perhaps something that you are not used to. Until next time...

Living Proof No Frizz System-AKA: No Frizz = The Perfect Curls
Forever on the search for the perfect curl (which ultimately means forever seeking to destroy frizz), I was happy to try out Living Proof's No Frizz system. It's a new line of hair care products, guaranteed to beat frizz. I deal will year long, humidity induced frizziness, but it's at its height during the warm summer months. All the poking and prodding and soothing we do to battle both humidity and friction tends to take a toll on our hair. Living Proof seeks to offer a solution

CGC: Carol's Daughter Macadamia Heat Protection Serum
(photo via Naturally Curly) |
Product Description: Macadamia Heat Protection Serum harnesses the power of Macadamia Oil’s frizz-shield to smooth the hair cuticle and provide a barrier for heat styling. Hydrolyzed Silk, a moisturizing protein, and pro-vitamin B5, known for its strengthening properties, shield hair from damaging heat styling such as blow-dryers, diffusers, curling irons and flatirons. Apply before heat styling. Product aids in straightening, adds moisture, gives frizz control, and is an anti-humectant.
Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Phenyl Trimethicone, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Alcohol Denat., Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrolyzed Silk, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Sprout Extract, Panthenol (Pro-vitamin B5), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate),Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate), Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Water (Aqua), Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum)
sulfate free, paraben free, glycerin free
sulfate free, paraben free, glycerin free
My Take: I don't know what took me so long to use this! The consistency was light and not at all greasy or sticky. The smell is fantastic (light and fresh, with not even a hint of nuttines, lol), and most importantly, it worked. Mind you, I used it after a poor hairstylist's failed attempt at a blow out, so I wasn't working with a full head of curls. But, it got my hair sleek, smooth, and shiny without an ounce of grease. I like that I really didn't need a lot of product to get the desired results-just a pump or two for each half of my hair and I was good to go! I will definitely be reaching for this whenever I want to straighten my curls!

It's A Rare Ocassion: My DNA Honeybee Leave-In Conditioner (Revisited)
My well loved bottle of Honeybee Leave-In Conditioner |
It is my immense privilege to be able to try out A LOT of products (especially hair products) and then share my experiences with you lovelies. Honestly even before I began blogging, I was sort of a product junkie (well, not really "sort of," more like actually) and I was forever adding to my hair care stash. I don't know if it's just a female thing, or maybe a curly girl thing, but it seems like I was always on the quest to find the perfect product(s) to give me the perfect head of hair.

GMYMO: Jump Rope Fitness
In my fitness journey, I've realized that in order for me to stay motivated to work out regularly, it has to be fun. And to get the best results, you have to change up your routine occasionally so that your body is forced to adjust and work differently/harder. So while I love my Zumba, I was on the lookout for something that was easy to do at home, in limited space, and with my little ones under foot.

CGC: Silky International Silky the Cap
photo via naturallycurly.com |
Product Description: Silky the cap is a 100% suede-like rayon bonnet style cap. Daily wear of Silky will protect your hair from becoming brittle, dry and damaged, thus preserving all your beautiful hairstyles with vigor and shine. The soft elastic edge will not rub out your edges, just push your cap up to the hairline and sleep or go about your day….enjoy!!
My Take: I like this cap WAY better than the ones I had been getting at Target for $3. The material is way more luxe and the elastic band keeps it shape a LOT better (I find that, especially with my daughter, the cheaper ones need to be replaced quite often). It fits close enough to your head to not slip and fall off over night (important if you're a rough sleeper), is roomy enough to fit a lot of hair (even in a pineapple), but not so tight as to be uncomfortable and leave marks on your forehead. So while it is a bit pricey, there are quite a few attributes that warrant it costing more than your average sleeping cap. I'm not sure that $25 is the right price, but I do think that it is worth more than other caps on the market.

Nail Fail :(
I'm always honest about my feelings/thoughts when I write a post, whether it's a review or just commentary. In general, I'm a very optimistic person and prefer to see the glass half full in life, which is reflected in my reviews. Even if I don't particularly care for a product, while I try to express my personal displeasure, I also strive to highlight some positive aspect, because I know that mine is certainly not the end all decision. I also generally don't like talking about things that I don't like, because well, it's not fun and it's not really my style. So perhaps this attitude has contributed to more of a "happy happy joy joy" vibe on Mama Fashionista, and while I'm cool with that, I do see the need to maybe be more balanced in my outlook/approach.
I've been contemplating how exactly to address this issue, how and when to bite the bullet and give a "negative" review, with obvious answer being, just continue to be honest and when something you don't like comes along, be tactful, but don't sugar coat it either. Well lovelies, it seems that the appropriate opportunity has presented itself.
I've expressed several times (and will continue to do so) my affection for painting my nails. It's a whole ritual we have at home on a fairly regular basis, and it's quite enjoyable for me and my girls. Part of the whole process is removing old polish in order to start anew. To that effect, I super excited to try Cutex' Advance Revival Nail Polish Remover One-Step Pads. Not only was is it formulated to strengthen and nourish your nails with botanical oils, it comes in a handy dandy, pre soaked, generously sized felt pad, presumably large enough to remove the polish from all 10 of your fingers. Um.... no...
For the sake of tact, I will try to keep this brief. The came out of the package moist, and possibly sufficiently so, but I would have preferred it to be a bit more saturated in solution. That being said, it being more wet probably wouldn't have helped the fact that it seems as if the solution does not work. At all. I mean, I tried just rubbing it on my pinky nail (figured it was the smallest and thus the easiest surface to test) and the polish did not budge. Not a bit. So I rubbed a little more vigorously. Nothing. So then I held the pad to my finger for a bit, and then rubbed. Nada. So I thought, perhaps the adorable Sally Hansen strips were special and needed an acetone based remover in order to come off. Ok! This will certainly work on the normal polish I have on my toes! So once again I tried my pinky (toe). Same (non) results. So for me, it's officially a fail.
I'm kind of disappointed. As I said, I was excited about this product, not only for it's sheer convenience, but also because of it's portability. I had visions of carrying the little packets in my purse to do on the go repairs and impromptu polish changes whenever and where ever. But it is not to be. C'est la vie....
Have you tried these wipes? Did they fair better for you? Do you have any alternate suggestions for me? My inquiring mind wants to know! Leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Until next time...
Ciao, XxO

CGC: Kinky-Curly Curling Custard
Kinky-Curly Curling Custard |
Product Description: Curling Custard gives moisture and curl definition, hold and brilliant shiny hair! An all in one product that will simplify the styling process and provide you with the best value for your dollar! This high-performance product is very concentrated so a little goes a long way. It reduces bulk, defines and elongates your curls, helping them to 'hang' better. Curling Custard will bring out the natural curl or wave pattern you never knew you had! It is an advanced botanical formula made with all natural ingredients that nourish and strengthen the hair. Utilizing the humectant properties of the agave nectar, Curling Custard will give weight to your hair, define your curls, remove frizz, provide long-lasting hold and shine without ever being greasy, crunchy or drying.
Ingredients: botanical infusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), pectic, citric acid, potassium sorbate and natural fragrance
silicone free, sulfate free, paraben free, organic, protein free, glycerin free, animal friendly
My Take: This was the curly girl jump off product for us! We use this in London's 4a/b hair and are huge fans! We've tried other products, but nothing promotes and holds her drinking straw width ringlets like the Curling Custard. It leaves her hair shiny and with a subtle scent. The best part is, as long as she wears a satin cap to sleep, we don't have to worry about even touching her hair for at least 3 days! This is one of those products that we just can't live without!

CGC: Sunny Isle Organic Pimento Oil with Black Castor Oil
Sunny Isle Organic Pimento Oil with Black Castor Oil (photo via naturallycurly.com) |
Product Description: Sunny Isle Jamaican Organic Pimento Oil is blended to promote Rapid Hair Growth as it includes Grape Seed Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, and Peppermint Oils. Peppermint is antibacterial and antiseptic so this is a self-cleansing blend that eliminates bumps and other scalp issues. The Pimento Oil stimulates the blood flow to the hair follicles and nourishes your hair. Massage into your scalp and edges to address traction and other types of alopecia. Use as a hair dress to moisturize and seal dry, breaking and fraying hair ends.
Ingredients: Jamaican Pimento Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Grape seed Oil, Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil
silicone free, paraben free, protein free, glycerin free
My Take: I really like this as an overnight or hot oil treatment. It feels tingly on the scalp and smells slightly of peppermint. The applicator makes it easy to apply so it is very user friendly and there is minimal mess. It's thicker than coconut and argan oil, but thinner than the other castor oils I tried, which is just perfect for me!

Product Description: All-natural hair dressing moisturizes hair and imparts a shine and bounce to curls. Nutrient rich vegetable butters condition hair, restoring moisture, body and shine. Enhances curls, minimizes frizz and provides curl control. For thick, curly hair. Adds moisture, definition, and shine.
Ingredients: De-ionized water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea butter)*, Macadamia Ternifolia seed oil, Mangifera Indica (mango) seed butter*, Persea Gratissima (avocado) oil, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) oil*, Aloe Barbadensis leaf extract, silk protein, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) seed oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (carrot) seed oil, Caprylyl glycol, Sorbitol Esters, essential oil blend, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower and Lonicera Japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract and Tocopherol (vitamin E). * these ingredients are certified organic.
silicone free, paraben free, organic, glycerin free
My Take: This product is the first I've used from Shea Moisture and I was truly impressed by the results we achieved using the Curl Enhancing Smoothie! I used it immediately after washing and conditioning my 3b hair, as a leave in conditioner and detangler. My curls were nicely defined and my hair was soft, shiny, and beautifully fragrant. It resisted humidity induced frizz and though I used no other product after applying the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, my 2nd day hair is gorgeous as well! We also used the product on Lo's 4a/b hair and had great results with her as well. In fact, my husband refuses to use anything else in her hair! We are definitely fans and will continue to use this product and look forward to trying more items within the Shea Moisture brand.

CGC: L'Oreal Paris Ever Sleek Super Sleek Intense Serum
L'Oreal EverSleek Super Sleek Intense Serum (photo via naturallycurly.com) |
Product Description: Say goodbye to stubborn, unmanageable frizz with EverSleek Sulfate-Free Smoothing System Super Sleek Intense Serum. This smoothing serum, infused with Argan, Sunflower and Olive oils, helps control rebellious and unruly hair without the weight of heavy silicones. Hair is left shiny and stunningly sleek. Silicone-free 48-hour frizz control.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Steareth 100/PEG 136/HDI Coloymer, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PEG 15 Cocopolyamine, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Limonene, Benzyl Alcohol, Citronellol, Courmarin, F.I.L. D48778/1
silicone free, sulfate free, paraben free, protein free
My Take: As far as serums go, it's okay. For me, it falls short of expectations; it just leaves something to be desired (probably silicone). I think this is perfect if you are anti silicones, as it does give a nice sheen and provides some frizz control. I can't see using it again for myself for curly hairstyles, but I will use it to prep my hair for straightening. I also like to use it for added shine in my daughter's 4a/b hair.

U R Curly Loose Curl Enhancer (photo via naturallycurly.com) |
Product Description: Our Loose Curl Enhancer gel is alcohol-free, rich with Glycerin and Soy Protein and enhanced with Provitamin B5 and Echinacea which work to moisturize your hair. Whether you wear your hair long or short, the friendly ingredients found within our weightless U R Curly Loose Curl Enhancer gel activator formula formula will revive and stimulate your curls and waves while defining their shape, controlling the frizz and leaving it shiny and soft to the touch. Our Loose Curl Enhancer delivers lasting curl memory, reduces breakage, nourishes damaged hair – helping you reach your hair goals. Adds definition.
Ingredients: Artesian Water, Glycerin, PPG-5 Ceteth-20, Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG Silanetriol, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil (Abyssinian Oil), Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Echinaecea Extract, IodopropynylButylcarbamate
silicone free, paraben free
My Take:
I kind of want to like this more because unlike most gels I've encountered, this one did not leave a bit of crunch in my hair at all. The scent was very pleasant (more so that the shampoo and conditioner in this line in my opinion), but I have to settle on saying this was just, meh. While my curls were pretty decently defined, in all honesty I don't need styling products to define my curls (or form them for that matter), I need products to provide frizz control, and this just doesn't seem to be doing that. I didn't leave the house after using this, and it wasn't at all humid but when I looked in the mirror, I there was frizz. No bueno. But... I do think I will use this for up do's and such, because there is a lovely sheen to the hair that hasn't gone poof...

U R Curly Quinoa Conditioner (photo via naturallycurly.com) |
Product Description: Our Quinoa Conditioner is free of alcohol, parabens and sulfates. It is made with quinoa protein and enriched with Abyssinian Oil, Lavender and Aloe. Whether you wear your hair long or short, the friendly ingredients found within our weightless U R Curly Quinoa, pronounced “KEEN-wah,” Conditioner will moisturize and detangle your hair leaving it shiny and soft to the touch. Our unique formula is designed to reduce breakage, nourish damaged hair and help promote hair growth– helping you reach your hair goals.
Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Peg-40 Hydrogenated, Castor Oil, Stearalkonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Glycerin, Polyquaternium-10, DMDM Hydantoin, Menthol, Leaf Oil, Crambe, Abyssinica Seed Oil (Abyssinian Oil), Fragrance, Aloe, Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender), Flower/Leaf/Stern Extract, lodopropynl Butylcarbarrate.
silicone free, sulfate free, paraben free
My Take: As far as conditioner goes, it was ok. Nothing extraordinary, but it did adequately perform it's duties. It was nice and thick in texture and it provided enough slip for me to detangle my hair in the shower. I left it on for about 5 minutes (as directed to on the bottle) and my hair felt nice and soft once I rinsed it out. I did like the nice cooling/tingling effect it had on my scalp as I left it in my hair in the shower. London, on the other hand, kind of freaked out over the cooling sensation, so think twice about using it on little ones.
