Marriage; Have You Thought About It Properly?

Marriage is seen as one of life’s biggest decision, it’s not something that should be taken lightly. Nuptials aren't for everyone, but for the people who crave commitment, there are some things you should think about before settling down. There actually might be some clear signs that you’re not quite ready for marriage. When you feel like you’ve found ‘the one’ it can be far too easy to run ahead and commit to marriage, however, you should experience life first. It’s essential that you do some soul-searching and put the time into learning about yourself, just as much as learning about your partner.

If you think that you’re ready to take the leap then it might be time to start looking for engagement rings and planning your wedding, but first, have a look at some of the things you should get ticked off:

You’re Mature

Being an adult doesn’t automatically mean that you’re mentally mature, this takes some life experience and practice. There is no ‘best’ age to get married, and it will be different for every couple, however, there is a certain level of mental maturity that you need to get to before you should be getting down on one knee. Think about where you are in your current life, are you happy with your achievements and have you hit the targets that your younger self set for you?

Have You Soul-Searched?

When getting married you want your partner to love you for you, and to do this you are going need to get to know the real you. Think about who you really are and whether you are showing your true self to your partner. Think about a time when you might change, for example when you’re not getting your own way or become agitated with a situation. You need to know and understand why you react in certain ways so that you can explain to your partner why you act like this too. Also, are you bringing any baggage to the marriage and how will it affect it? Put some time into knowing yourself as well as your partner.

You Deal With Conflict Constructively

There is always going to be some level of conflict between two people, this is because no two people are the same. How do you react to confrontation? Disappointment? Conflict? And you someone who avoids or do you attack? If you’re courting relationship is full of arguments and drama that isn’t going to change when you get married. Conflict is a necessary requirement in any relationship. And when it’s done correctly it can be constructive. The aim of any conflict is to come to a mutual understanding and be able to move forward together. Try to understand and really listen to any concerns that your partner might have, and they should do the same for you. Don’t criticize and hide anything, these are sure-fire ways to head for divorce if you do marry.

These three topics are important to consider before getting married, even if you’re in a long-term committed relationship, it’s best to make sure you are both ready for the next step before running into it. Do you have any other advice that you could share in the comments?
