3 Tips to Treat Psoriasis

Affecting as many as 7.5 million Americans, Psoriasis is a disease that affects the skin, appearing as dry, raised red patches {even celebs like Kim Kardashian & Leann Rimes live with Psoriasis}. Board certified dermatologist {and Sebamed spokesperson}, Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, has shed light on symptoms and new, easy treatments.  {Products provided for review/feature consideration}

Here are 3 tips from Dr. Nussbaum:

Bathe Properly: Bathing can play important part of psoriasis self-care, yet frequent bathing can also dry skin out, causing problems. It's important that the water be lukewarm and that you wash with a soap-free pH balanced wash, as regular soap can strip the skin of moisture. Try using Sebamed Liquid Face & Body Wash  for an all over, gentle clean. Lastly, pat (don't rub) skin dry after a hot shower to avoid further irritation. ($7.97, Walmart stores nationwide)

Keep Skin Moist and Hydrated: Psoriasis can be a vicious cycle as it leaves skin dry, scaly and itching, and can lead to development of new patches. To keep skin soft, try covering areas of the skin affected by Psoriasis with a hydrating lotion like Sebamed Moisturizing Body Lotion and wrap it with a bandage or wrap overnight. In the morning, wash the area gently and apply a day moisturizer with anti-inflammatory properties and neutralizing tints such to soothe and conceal Psoriasis symptoms. ($19.95, SebamedUSA.com and CVS stores)

Consider Diet and Lifestyle Changes: Many people with Psoriasis have claimed improvement after cutting down on certain foods, including sugar, white flour, gluten, and caffeine. There is also an association between obesity and Psoriasis, and many dermatologists feel a healthy weight can improve symptoms. Try improving your Psoriasis by simple lifestyle changes like eliminating certain foods (especially less nutritious ones) and exercising as little as 30 minutes daily.
