For many people, a change in seasons brings an increase in eczema skin flare ups, or what is more commonly known as the "winter itch." In support of Eczema Awareness Month (October), board certified dermatologist, Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, shares some insight into its symptoms and new treatments. {Product provided for review/feature consideration}
Here are her first few steps and product recommendations for treating eczema:
Step #1 Everyday Cleansing Basics: Bathing can play important role in healthy skin. It's essential to take warm (not hot!) baths on regular basis and apply moisturizers immediately following to keep skin moist. During baths, use a soap-free, pH balanced wash like SebamedLiquid Face & Body Wash, as regular soap can strip the skin of moisture. Lastly, pat (don't rub) skin dry after a hot shower to avoid further irritation. ($12.95, Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid and SebamedUSA.com)
Step #2 Repair + Restore Skin: Every second spent in a hot shower is moisture lost from skin. To help dry and patchy skin recover quickly, rub a moisturizing lotion all over within three minutes of hopping out of the shower. You'll seal in hydration and add to skin's protective barrier before the water has a chance to evaporate. Try Sebamed Moisturizing Body Lotion. ($19.95, SebamedUSA.com)
Step #3 Follow the 8 x 8 Rule: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while it sounds boring, is truly of tantamount importance in maintaining a youthful appearance (and healthy insides as well!). Drinking eight 8-ounce glasses a day of water to help your body stay healthy, and prevent further flare ups. Eating a varied diet consisting of lots of fruits and veggies will help skin stay clear as well.
