Is Spray Lotion For You?

I was instantly intrigued about spray lotion formulas as soon as they hit the market - I'm always on the lookout for products to help keep ashiness at bay. Vaseline and St. Ives have both come out strong with their respective formulas, but is a spray lotion really what you need to keep your skin soft and moisturized? {Products sent for consideration}

Vaseline's Spray & Go Moisturizer ($6 at Target and target.com) comes in 3 different formulas: Aloe Fresh, Cocoa Radiance, and Total Moisture {the one I tried out}. The Total Moisture variety is infused with pure oat extract to promote healthy, soft skin and all 3 formulas are meant to provide deep moisturization in a quick and convenient delivery system. This was my jam for the girls and I during the summer, I kept it on the bookcase right by our front door. It was so quick and easy to spray legs, feet, knees, and arms on the way out the door to make sure that everyone was hit with a dose of moisture. The spray really is continuous and it smells nice but not overpowering. Unlike the commercial, you do have to rub in the spray {you can't just spray and go}, but it does absorb fairly quickly and without being slick or sticky.

St. Ives Fresh Hydration Lotion ($6 at Target and target.com) also comes in 3 varieties: Naturally Indulgent Coconut Milk & Orchid Extract, Naturally Soothing Oatmeal & Shea Butter, and Energizing Citrus & Vitamin C {the one I gave a go}. The version I tried features grapefruit extract, vitamin C and 100% natural moisturizers like vegetable glycerin and shea butter to rejuvenate and refresh your skin. Like the Vaseline version, the point of these is to be easy-to-apply lotion sprays that go on lightly and are quickly absorbed. I found the spray of the St. Ives lotion to be a bit more user friendly - it isn't as intense and is easier to apply to yourself without assistance {I found that I needed someone else to spray me when I used the Vaseline spray because it was a bit of a mess if not applied from a distance}. This spray is also more lotion-y - it actually sprays out white and has a more creamy texture when you rub it in, where as the Vaseline version was clear. And I am head over heels for the light, fresh scent of this formula {I'm a sucker for anything grapefruit scented}. I prefer to use this lotion in the mornings - I shower at night and have a system for moisturizing then {I apply oil on damp skin right out of the shower and then apply a heavy cream or butter later}, but in the winter months my skin is super dry {we're talking Sahara level} so I need a bit of a moisture boost in the AM. This spray is so quick and easy to use and it really does absorb fairly quickly {though like the Vaseline version, you do have to rub it in a bit}.

In general, I really like spray lotions, but I think they are better suited for the warmer months and are not necessarily the cure for dry or super dry skin. They are great for quick and on the go moisturization, but will not replace your traditional lotion, cream, or butter. Have you had a chance to try out these innovative spray lotions? What do you think of them: love 'em or leave 'em? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think! Until next time...

  1. If you have to rub it in still, why not just use regular lotion? Confused about why a spray-on is better/faster/easier....?

    1. I understand the confusion. I wouldn't say it's better, just different. It's faster because of the delivery system; it's a bit easier to apply all over (quickly) because of the spray (especially since it is continuous). And it's a bit easier in the sense that the formula is more lightweight than traditional lotions and so it absorbs into the skin a lot quicker and easier than traditional lotions and creams. Even though you do need to rub it in, it goes a lot quicker than regular lotions.

      Hope this helps Wendy! Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment!
