Sometimes One Color Does NOT Fit All: dr. brandt signature BB Cream with Flexitone

I'm a fan of BB Creams in general- I like products that serve multiple purposes and though I want my skin to look flawless, I still want it to look like skin, so the concept of BB Creams are right up my alley. I've only tried a couple different ones so far (Garnier's and Smashbox's; which I raved about here), but I've been very pleased with the results and as always, I'm interested in finding out what else is out there to love.

I signed up for New Beauty TestTube, a quarterly subscription service, and was very pleased with my first shipment. One of the samples I received was Dr. Brandt's Signature BB Cream with Flexitone. I was very excited to give it a try especially since it said that it was a multi-functional, anti-aging, SPF 30 protective & perfecting cream that provides flawless natural-looking coverage with just one shade, suitable for "most" skin tones. What's not to love about that!?!

Touted to be  "the first BB cream to incorporate tone-blending technology to provide flawless, skin perfecting coverage with just one shade! Formulated with Dr. Brandt’s signature flexitone® technology that blends seamlessly with most skin tones, this multi-functional anti-aging cream instantly perfects, brightens, and hydrates with SPF 30 protection-" this BB Cream promises to:
  • blends seamlessly with most skin tones, providing an alternative to traditional foundation
  • helps correct flaws & uneven skin tone to perfect overall complexion
  • helps brighten & provide a healthy glow
  • protects skin from UVA/UVB rays with SPF 30/PA+++
  • provides hydration*
  • helps smooth & improve the look of lines & wrinkles

I guess my complexion doesn't fall under the category of "most." I tried the cream out this weekend, and while I was going for a more natural look, I came out looking more like a geisha than I was comfortable with. I gave the cream adequate time to "adjust" thinking it might warm up to my tone if given enough time. Not so much. I will say that my skin looked smooth and even with the cream on, just not the right shade. Because the coverage was so nice (and I really didn't feel like starting all over again), I decided to use Smashbox's HALO Hydrating Perfection Powder to correct the color, which worked-until I finished my look with some finishing spray. The results resembled something like that of Batman villain; let's just say it wasn't pretty. I was so frustrated at this point that I ended up leaving the house sans face makeup.

I'll admit, part of the problem was that I applied my makeup using a teeny tiny mirror ( I was doing the best that I could while trying to nurse to Kenzie). Because I could not get a full view of my entire face until after I had applied all of my makeup, I had no idea that the BB Cream did not work for me until it was too late.

Despite the fact that Dr. Brandt's BB Cream did not work for me, I think I feel comfortable enough to recommend it to those of you lovelies that have a lighter complexion than my own. That being said, I can not deny my great disappointment in a product that claims to be suitable for "most" skin tones when really it should say "many" or "some." The BB Cream would definitely not work on anyone darker than me, neither for quite a few complexions lighter than mine. That being the case, in my humble opinion, using the designation "most" is at best incorrect and at the very worst, misleading. Or perhaps "most" women are of tan/olive complexion or lighter...

What do you think? Do you think "most" is the description that should be used with this product? Am I just being sensitive because it didn't work for me? My inquiring mind wants to know! Leave a comment below and tell me what you think. Until next time...

Ciao, XxO

  1. What is your complexion? I'm NC42 in MAC. Would this be too light for me?

    1. I think I'm a NW45 (I think), but I'm a Rich Ginger in Revlon's ColorStay collection and a Med/Dark in Smashbox's HD collection. I would recommend checking out Sephora to see if they carry the BB Cream, and getting a sample of it (they're awesome about that). I'm tempted to say that it might be too pale for you as well, but you can always give it a shot!
